Small Vessel Operators Proficiency

Course Overview
The Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) course is a Transport Canada–approved, 26-hour training program designed for operators of commercial vessels under 5 gross tonnage (or 6 metres for passenger vessels) engaged in near coastal or sheltered waters operations.

This comprehensive course equips participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to safely operate small commercial vessels. Through a combination of theory, interactive discussions, and applied scenarios, learners develop a strong understanding of navigation, safety procedures, collision regulations, and emergency response — ensuring compliance with Canadian maritime standards. $950

Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDVBS- MED)

Course Overview
Small Vessel Domestic Basic Safety (SDVBS) is a Transport Canada–approved training program designed for crew members working on small commercial vessels. 

Training covers key marine emergency duties such as fire prevention and firefighting, emergency procedures, survival techniques, personal safety, and the proper use of lifesaving equipment. Participants also learn how to respond to situations such as abandoning ship, assisting passengers in emergencies, and working safely as part of a vessel crew.

SDVBS certification helps vessel operators meet Canadian marine safety requirements while ensuring crew members are prepared to act quickly and confidently in emergency situations on the water. $350

Mandatory Online Fatigue Management Course (FREE)

Course Overview
 This training is provided at no cost to registered Canadian seafarers and can be purchased by anyone interested in taking the course. 

 

Fatigue is dangerous in all types of transportation where employees routinely work long and irregular hours for extended periods. Seafarers often experience factors that contribute to fatigue, including:

  • poor sleep quality
  • poor sleeping conditions (such as noise, lighting, vibration, poor ventilation and motion of the vessel)
  • rotating shifts
  • work or sleep that doesn’t match the body’s circadian rhythm (internal clock)
  • stress and excessive workload

Navigation Safety

Understanding the wording of Collision Regulations can be one of the most daunting parts of this course. In this course, Linda breaks down the language to simple examples any mariner can remember.  This course is available online, however currently is not accredited, which means you still need to challenge the final exam at a Transport Canada Office. 


NAv Safety can be online, interactive, or a self guided. This course is not  TC accredited at this time.  $250

 This course introduces mariners to the Canada Shipping Act, MARPOL, and key Occupational Health and Safety practices. Participants gain the knowledge needed to support safe operations, prevent pollution, and understand their responsibilities at sea. This course is self lead and available online, however currently is not accredited, which means you still need to challenge the final exam at a Transport Canada Office.  $500
